I need to get a new battery for the 7, ideally I'd like a gel type that wont discharge as much over time as a lead acid battery(as the car is stored in a garage with no power for a battery conditioner), and one that can provide a fairly high cranking current (the current battery has always turned the engine over quite slowly and sometimes not at all when hot).
Any suggestions? and suggestion of where to buy either online (preferable) or in the manchester region.
I guess chances are that if I want a higher cranking current I'll need a physically bigger battery than the standard banner one, hence I'll need to get a new battery holder too.
PS - does anyone know the dimensions of the standard battery.

The cranking problem may not be the battery - banners are actually quite powerfull . It may be the starter motor you are using .

You could be right, but it is a high quality motor from raceline (read expensive), I did change it about a year ago because I thought the original starter motor (from scrappie) might be knackered.
The main issue I want to address though is the discharge over a period of time, as my current battery is now dead.
I've done asearch on the forum, and notice that people reccomend the red top 15/25/30 batteries, do they really have enough capacity for general road use, you know, running lights, wipers etc.
Do they fit into the banner batttery holder, or do you need a new holder?
I guess if you;re not bothered about weight you should go as big as you can physically fit (and afford). |

I should add that this is on a 2.0 zetec with a higher than normal compression ratio. |

Julian S I bought a Fiamm battery from a local motor factor. Part details: 12V 30Ah 320AEN 45RC 53031 896FS It is the right size, terminal type & fits the Caterham battery box. I've had it a year without any problems. Best bit was the cost £25! HTH Mark |

How about a solar trickle charger? I believe these are sufficient even in Winter to keep a battery topped up (I know a manufacturer that puts these on cars in the workshop - just the flourescent lights are enough to keep the cars tip top). You could mount the panel outside/on the roof and just trail the cable into the garage.

Can't you disconnect it and take it home with you Only takes a couple of minutes to remove the battery.

Or remove the cut out switch (fit one if you haven't got one) and it'll do the same job.

I could remove it, but its a lot of hassle to do everytime I use the car.
I have a gel battery on my boat, and that retains its charge perfectly even over a period of 12 months left completely unattended.
My car has no circuits draining power when its left (no immobiliser or anything).
I had considered the solar panel idea, but that would probably get stolen within about a week.
Does anyone have the dimensions of the standard battery to hand? I think I'll go with a red top type battery, the question is which one? Ideally one with enough juice to start the car, and enough capacity to run the lights etc, and one that will slot straight in to the existing holder. |

Having searched the archives, I've ordered an odyssey PC680 from www.technobots.com. 16ah capacity, 680 cranking amps, weighs around 6 kg's.
I'll just have to make the bracket that hold it a bit smaller. |

julians: Good detective work I'm going to get one too One thing though. Their add says std SAE terminals - do they mean std car terminals or the almost flush terminals the batteries come with? The website doesn't seem to say. Did you call them? If not I will before I buy. From what I've seen, you normally buy additional terminals to convert the flush std terminals for the application you're using the battery for.

From having a look around the web, they are the flush fit type terminal, I believe they can supply you with a more conventional post type addon for a few quid.
