I have just had a good chat with Kevin who runs the pub. It is now obviously back up and running and the New Year day meet was successful. 13 Sevens turned up. He assures me that things are changing for the better and he will be bringing other areas of the pub / next door into use in the not too distant future.
Whilst The Poacher provides us with good sized smoke free accomodation (this was key to many of our members) and we could use the room for functions, the heritage and focal point simply isn't there. The car park is also pretty cramped and would not take a 30+ Sevens turn out.
I will be seeing Kevin during the week to discuss what's what and also put our area's points across about meeting rooms, smokefreer environment and the complains with the service I received from others / suffered myself. Hopefully this is all behind The Phoenix now and things can get better from now on.
For those who don't know the back ground we were meeting at the Phoenix as has been tradition for years every last Thursday meetnig but were thinking of moving elsewhere. We moved the 2nd Weds meet simply as somewhere else to be (and we get free chips and sossers). Shortly before Xmas the Phoenix closed abruptly and I was forced to find another meet in short time.
Now the Phoenix is open again so is my mind to moving back there.
So, Lets take it from there. Watch this space.

Well, the Poacher seems a nice pub, and the landloard has been very welcoming to us. However, I don't care for the drive after I cross the A30, it is all low limits and you never get going, so I am happy to go back to the bird rising from the flames...

Hmmm, on the one hand I am thinking "a leopard doesn't change it's spots" but on the other hand, whilst we were welcomed at the Poacher, the area we were sitting in just lacks that certain something.
I would vote for the Phoenix provided he is serious about addressing the issues already discussed and can I add to that list.......awful food which needs sorting out and his bizarre attitude towards us not drinking much in the way of alcoholic beverage. There is a greater mark up on soft drinks anyway so I can't see what he has to complain about.
The smoke problem isn't really an issue in the summer months as we are generally outside anyway.

Hi Steve -
I'd prefer to go back to The Phoenix as well.
Whilst we were made to feel welcome at The Poacher, I can't see the car park being big enough in the summer - and not much room for those Steve-B et al donuts
Definitely agree with Brent about the service, absolutely appalling for the final meets we had there.

It sounds like I'm in a minority (of one?), but I vote to stay at the Poacher. Yes, it's a pain for me to get to, but the Phoenix service, smoke, food, and potholes are just too bad to reward with our custom, IMHO. |

My vote is for the Feeeeenix however I agree with Brent re Leopards and spots. The Poachers is OK but it does lack atmosphere. However it does make up for this with the waitresses
It would be good if the Phoenix could offer a us a proper "snack" menu like the good old days. (one with proper chips - not ones stacked up like a game of Jenga )

slightly O/T but just thought I'd say... I went to the Shoulder of Mutton on saturday evening in the SeVen. Great pub, very nice food, and the landlord made us feel very welcome, and seeing my wheels and pixy boots asked if it was off a Caterham, which then led into the 'do you come along on 2nd wednesday....' |

Feenix!
Provided (in order).....
....Smoke is reduced (this is the most important point for me), staff are more welcoming, snack menu is provided, they stop Andy Webber drinking too much .
It would also be nice to see..... ....less potholes in the carpark, cheaper soft drinks, more seating, buxom wenches serving behind the bar
You laugh at me because I'm different, I laugh at you because you're all the same.

Hi Steve,
Never made it to the new place (sorry!), and with only a few trips to the Phoenix this year I didn't really experience the problems, although it was a bit smoky, and those potholes were getting pretty awful. So, I can't really justify a strong opinion either way...
I'll try and get over there once the weather warms up - honest! (Although hopefully I'll be waist-deep in powder, up a mountain somewhere, for the next couple of meetings...)
Maybe if we could combine a couple of Kev's suggestions: "staff are more welcoming" and "buxom wenches serving behind the bar"
...we could be onto a winner. Oh dear, I appear to be turning into Leslie Phillips... "Ding dong"...
See you soon.
Cheers, Mark
