Latest: ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Got feedback from many of you.
The meeting this last Thurs of the month will be at the Phoexix.
Vroom Steve
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Met with Kevin last night. He had many assuring words for me. He and Carol will be the bar staff on duty pretty much all the time. In peak times there may be others of course. There was one lass on duty last night that Den would very much approve of and could try out all his Blatchat learned chat up lines...(slaps in the face are always free Den). Kevin recognised that there was a bad patch of management (the SA's) and that they had not really talked to any of the car clubs (ever) to see how things were or what could be improved. He says they are very keen to get the car clubs back in and attract more clubs if possible. I gave him a sanitised / anonymous list of the feedback I gathered from you lot (don't worry not traceable to anyone) This was useful as he could see in writing how a significant number of us feel.
There is extra capital being invested in the pub and they will be developing the buildings next door for function / meetings rooms so say.
I addressed the concerns of having somewhere in winter to sit in a less smoky environment. Kevin is quite happy to reserve an area for us, to the right of the bar as you go in for instance, (an area with 4+ tables and chairs, enough to seat us on regular winter nights). Summer nights we are all out kicking tyres of course. This is however bound to be pretty smoky! In the time I spent meeting Kevin + drinking the pint he bought me, I was reeking of smoke when I came out. Once the proposed function rooms are ready we are welcome to use those as our meeting room. If we choose these can be non-smoking.
Kevin wanted to listen to our views and proposals regarding menus. Some of you voiced that the food quality had gone downhill greatly. There is a new chef and the menu's look good. The dinner menu proper is fancy enough and expensive enough so it had better be good!
There is a limited bar and garden menu as follows:-
Snack Menu, Soup of the day £4.50, Home-made chips £2.50, Coronation Chicken salad with Pitta bread £5.95. Open sandwiches, Minute steak with fried French onion rings £6.50, Bacon, Mozzarella and tomato £5.95, Tuna and mayonnaise £5.95, Ham and Stilton £5.95, Sausage and fried egg £5.95. Kevin was keen to point out that if we wanted some combination of the above, say Sausage, egg and chips that would be fine to sort out and if we had other suggestions he was very willing to hear them. Jason, time for that JB special request! It was also suggested that if we started meeting there again then Kevin would gladly sit down with us to hear our views on service, menu improvements etc.
As for the car park some pot holes are filled in and I am sure an area of reserved parking could be arranged for busy summer meets as this is known to attract interest and pub punters.
So, there you have it.
On balance I say go with the Phoenix. Being there yesterday evening felt sort of like going home... If the food, smoke, meeting room issue's are addressed over time with our consultation then this is fine with me.
I will not be in the UK for the next meet (in Germany) but suggest we move back to the Phoenix from the next Thursday meet (27th of January).
What do you lot say? I will of course let The Poacher know if we decide not to go there.

I say return to The Phoenix... (lots of puns spring to mind about flames & ashes)... If it doesn't pan out after a couple of months we can always make a new spiritual home then.

Let's give it a go. Like you said, it's like home.

I vote for the Phoenix return. I presume we will be sticking with the SOM for the Wednesday meet? Guy

I am a born cynic but I would love to be proven wrong in this instance as I like the idea of staying with the Phoenix. If the brewery are spending money then I hope some of it is spent towards cleaning the air.
As you commented Steve, in the short time you were there you came out reeking of smoke!
And BTW, as Guy says definitely keep the SOM meeting. The welcome we receive there (not to mention the bangers & chips) is always good plus the fact that bar girl has got a really nice
If only the car park were bigger the SOM would be difficult to fault.

In business we'd usually wait until the supplier delivered what we wanted then buy from him
If he can't deliver what you want why buy from him

I am still confused as Kevin is not the licensee (some problems selling white powder over the counter) and his wife is trying to kick him out as she IS the licensee, which is why they closed before Xmas. Dunno where these function rooms are either as the coachworks has just applied to remain as just that.
SWMBO is a parish councellor so I must keep nagging her to find out the gossip.
BTW just learned that the road to the SOM will be closed from 14th feb for resurfacing for 6-8 weeks. So you'll have to approach from hook down the windies and throught the cow pats. |

Perhaps my cynicism is justified in this instance then. but let's hope not
Does that road actually need resurfacing Bill Seemed alright last week when I drove down it although that was in the Uberbarge rather than a 7 so maybe I just didn't feel the potholes.

That road seemed fine to me in the 7. They should spend the money stopping the wild things getting on to the road IMO.
As for past antics, lets hope for repentance and new ways...

Surely the perfect thing is to keep it split between the SOM and Phoenix, as long as all the issues are sorted. We'll never know unless we go with it and try it out, I'm sure everyone will realise within afew meetings if there is any change.
SOM sets the standard as far as the interior of the phoenix goes, food is , and bar maid is very !
